Peaceful Interlude

I recently came across a live feed from a Danish wildlife photographer Morten Hilmer.  He purchased a farm with an intent to re-wild the land.  He set up a camera to photograph the local wildlife and connected it to YouTube as an unedited feed.

My dear wife wonders at my sanity sometimes. I’ve spent hours watching this. I play it in the background as I work. I really like that it is a feed. Granted Morten uses bait to attract the animals but this is real time. You need to slow your expectations down to the pace of the forest. Of particular joy to me is, there is no introduction, no music, no narration, no choreography; just the passing of time at one place, on one farm in Denmark.

Here is the back story to the camera installation.  The camera and lights are solar powered and the data feed is by cable back to the house.  I like this setup.  I have a commercial solar generator but I plan to build my own, when I get some time.

And here is a link where you might purchase his photographs. Some are packaged in calendar form, but note the warning that they sell out fast.

Enjoy some nearly natural peace courtesy of Morten.

For those desiring their nature force fed in bits and pieces there is WildEarth. The videos are not bad, but I find watching them frustrating. More time is spent watching and listening to people than the animals they are there to see. Not to put too fine a point on it, but when you are recording with a narrow band lapel microphone, never say “Did you hear that?” No I didn’t, you chose your equipment poorly.

That being said, WildEarth offers virtual safaris in Southern Africa that you can join live from the comfort of your home; check the times.

Oh, and here is one that is intermediate in production efforts. It’s an animal refuge in in Transylvania, Romania. Lots of bears there.
