While out in the woods I enjoy reading legends local to the area. I recently traveled to the Maury Mountains. These mountains were at the northern edge of the lands used by the Numu. They were also visited by the Plateau tribes; who were less than friendly to them. I envision raiders from the south passing raiders from the north near this area.
On a recent visit to Ft Vancouver I found River Song, a collection of verbal histories by Richard Scheuerman and Clifford E. Trafzer. In Gordon Fisher’s contribution is found the story of How Beaver Brought Fire. Here is a video of me telling that story to the animals and trees of the Maury Mountains next to my campfire.
I tried to record another story but the batteries in my camera failed. I started again and again while the next two sets also failed. I took that as a sign that the forest didn’t wish to hear that story. So I put the camera away and listened to the evening’s show featuring a bull elk scraping the velvet from his antlers. A very peaceful way to spend an evening.
